Two Yorkshire Wolds businesses are celebrating after winning prestigious rural awards.
Wold Newton based Wold Top Brewery and sister company, Spirit of Yorkshire from Hunmanby won the Sustainability/Environment Award and the Food and Drink Producer of the Year award respectively at the Yorkshire Post Rural Awards that were presented at an event in Harrogate last week.
Wold Top faced tough competition from Woodmeadow Trust to win the Sustainability/Environment Award, whilst Spirit of Yorkshire beat Wold Top, Soanes Poultry, Moonshine Ice Cream and Yorvale to take the Food and Drink Producer crown.
Jenni Ashwood, marketing director at Spirit of Yorkshire Distillery and sister of Wold Top director, Kate Balchin, said: “It was strange competing against our sister company for the Food and Drink Producer award, but fortunately both Kate and I share the view that a bit of sibling rivalry is healthy, and we were both delighted with the results.”
The two businesses have also reached the final of the York Press Business Awards. Wold Top Brewery has been shortlisted for the Family Business award and Spirit of Yorkshire for the Small Business Award. The winners will be announced on 25th November at an event at York Racecourse.
Wold Top Brewery was founded by in 2003 and is located on the Mellor family farm at Hunmanby Grange. The team use home grown barley and water from the farm’s borehole to produce a range of award-winning cask, keg and bottled beers that are available throughout Yorkshire and nationwide.
Spirit of Yorkshire is Yorkshire’s first single malt whisky distillery and is one of only a handful of distilleries that grows the barley for whisky production. It is a collaboration between farmer and brewer, Tom Mellor and business partner, David Thompson.
