Innovative tech entrepreneurs across South Yorkshire were given a boost last week with the official launch of the TEAM SY project.
The TEAM SY launch event at Barnsley’s Digital Media Centre (DMC 01) included keynote speaker Marta Krupinska, head of Google for Startups UK, and celebrated South Yorkshire’s startup activity bringing together those leading on entrepreneurial support to share insights over an evening of networking.
The TEAM SY project is led by start-up experts Capital Enterprise, in partnership with Barnsley Council, and aims to connect with existing business support services to expand, enhance and extend the collective impact of their work across South Yorkshire.
Darren Balcombe, deputy CEO of Capital Enterprise, said: “We are very excited about working in South Yorkshire to help expand and improve the existing business support and investment ecosystem – and bring new resources and expertise into the mix.
“TEAM SY is a key project that demonstrates how South Yorkshire is working to further grow its high-value digital and tech cluster. Ahead of the government’s ‘Levelling Up White Paper, the event provided the perfect platform for networking and collaboration with future partners, raising the profile of the region and showcasing exciting new opportunities.”
Keynote speaker at the event Marta Krupinska delved into the importance of tech ecosystems and the support that tech startups require. There was also a panel discussion that questioned ‘How can we make our South Yorkshire entrepreneurial ecosystem stronger?’ led by John Spindler, CEO of Capital Enterprise.
Coun Tim Cheetham, Barnsley Council’s Cabinet Spokesperson for Regeneration and Culture, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to launch such an important project here at Barnsley’s DMC. The mission is to help new and early-stage South Yorkshire businesses take best advantage of what support is available to them and to invest in and build on regional strengths such as the ‘Internet of Things’, advanced manufacturing, and digital healthcare.
“We’re delighted Barnsley is at the heart of the South Yorkshire-wide programme and we’ll soon be sharing details on upcoming activity such as a programme for early-stage Internet of Things entrepreneurs, in partnership with Yorkshire-based network provider Connexin that will be based at the Maker Lab in the DMC.”
The TEAM SY project will run until June 2023 and aims to help digital and tech businesses explore new ideas and markets, set-up or scale-up their tech companies and create up to 200 high-value jobs in the process. A key objective will be to help entrepreneurs gain financial backing for their enterprises, attracting over £20 million in private investment to the region.
TEAM SY stands for ‘Technology Ecosystem Acceleration and Market-Making South Yorkshire’ and is a £4.6m ERDF part-funded project focused on growing the South Yorkshire startup and investment ecosystem.
TEAM SY’s goal is to create a sustainable, strong and competitive regional tech ecosystem that can attract and sustain significantly more entrepreneurs to start and scale tech businesses in the region. TEAM SY project leaders will work collaboratively with business support providers, universities, co-working spaces and other partners.
TEAM SY is fully funded by ERDF, Capital Enterprise and Barnsley Council
