Garforth-based Trust Electric Heating has given local students a glimpse into a manufacturing career by taking part in Garforth Academy’s careers initiative.
Garforth Academy secondary school and sixth form serves a broad range of communities and backgrounds. The school is committed to helping students prepare for life beyond their school careers, which includes providing a range of learning experiences about industry.
Trust Electric Heating is no stranger to youth development. The company currently has five apprentices on its staff, two of whom joined straight from Garforth Academy. Supporting education within the local community and developing talent is a key part of the company’s mission.
The award-winning heating provider volunteered to attend two events within the school to give students insights into different pathways into industry.
The workshops were attended by managing director Fiona Conor and sales apprentice and former Garforth Academy student, Gia Conor, and included a presentation and question-and-answer session.
Gia Conor joined Trust Electric Heating in 2019 and has since completed her degree through the company.
She said: “This has been the perfect route for me, as someone who did not flourish in a classroom environment. I now have a degree, invaluable real-world business insight and a guaranteed job.”
Fiona said: “Careers in manufacturing have changed so much over the last decade, and yet there are still so many outdated perceptions of what job in manufacturing entails. We’re very keen to bust some of those myths, and we also believe it is important that young people are aware of different routes into work.
“We have seen for ourselves how rewarding and worthwhile investing in the next generation can be for everyone involved. We have found the energy and enthusiasm of our apprentices has given our company real boost and contributed to our growth, whilst supporting their futures. It is the perfect combination!”
